Leonard Bernsteins tragedy was, that he was genious pianist, conductor and composer and lot of people did only pick out one aspect "he can play piano, but there are others plying better" same as conductor and composer and nobody did see that he was genious in summary. He is unique. This vid shows him being soloist and conductor in one person. And Mozart is hard to play and more hard to conduct. But he runs it. For me he is one of the best ever.

Whenever he performed as pianist/conductor it always seemed to me that he put the composer and the music above himself. There was only one Lenny, alas!, and just the fact of millions of us who never knew him or would have known him while alive still think of him as “ Lenny” expresses the love and gratitude we feel.

I really like this performance. I studied this at university and performed it with the orchestra in my fourth year. What I love about this performance is that it is almost orchestra first - the conductor in Bernstein really restrains him as a soloist from doing too much, which in my view would be out of character for a Mozart concerto. Conducting from the piano as was the norm in Mozart’s day, and helps settle the piano part as in concert with the orchestra, not its master. The rise of the soloist vs the orchestra dynamic was very much a later Romantic era development for the concerto. There have certainly been greater pianists than Bernstein who have played this work, but I really like this rendition. Thanks for posting!

As it’s a duet - Vienna philharmonic so literally attuned and so familiar with this composition and so we’ll-rehearsed that orchestra is transformed with Bernstein into one instrument Bernstein is playing with. Amazing! orchestra in super synched with Bernstein’s phrasing and joy of chord progressions, counterpoint, and melodic imagination of Mozart. I could listen and especially watch the great and intimate filming all day.

It may sound crazy, but Bernstein is underrated. Not being a conductor by nature, he leads the orchestra much more easily through his direct leadership at piano than when he stands at the podium. Then he does not interfere with the orchestra with his not always clear enough gesture. - Of course, active concert work has somewhat bled dry his creativity, despite his unconditional fame and his obvious achievements in composition.

Wonderful performance by Lennie. Mozart orchestration and flow is sublime. People are talking about the "Black Mozart" from the movie Chevalier. I listened to his violin Concerto which was spirited. But then I listen to this. The orchestration ,the virtuosity, the flow the variety of Mozart beats it by a mile.

Feels Mozart’s music so well, so sophisticated! That is a gift from God, very few can perform Mozart in Style, feeling for his Sunny Nature, Happy, but innocent Character!

more superlatives than even Beethoven could muster. Yes, Bernstein was a pianist and well established and known for being an accompanist because that's what pianists do. A great majority of pianists grow up to be conductors--is that such a surprise? After all, there is Previn, Tilson-Thomas and many many others. And no, conducting while being the pianist was probably not very difficult because first of all, the Vienna Philharmonic can probably get through the music in its sleep and secondly, Bernstein has probably conducted or played the piece many dozens of time in his life. He just chose a good show piece to dazzle impressionable audiences. Probably Liberace could do it just as well if were had wanted to.

First thing that struck me about Bernstein here was his “affected” conducting; pretending to himself that he was Viennese or a contemporary of Mozart. The orchestra is not influenced by his gesturing so he was probably trying to influence his own playing.

He is good but I have rarely seen somebody so full of himself as he is. Half the orchestra cannot see him. He is like Lang Lang playing with his body. For Lisitsa or Yuja Wang this is dead easy. He must get the money for both; for playing AND conducting.

Look at the old fraud and his antics before the piano. What a slushy Romantic style he brings to the piano concerti of an unsurpassed Classical master. Poor Wolfgang! Bernstein should have stuck to Broadway musicals, where he is an undoubted master. As a classical musician he tried to imitate von Karajan, but was only a poor man's ripoff.

actually you haven't a clue what you're blabbing about. I might not like Bernstein, but he was an outstanding pianist and this is done in Mozart style and not "Romantic". You're not exactly bright regarding music in making that comment.

Clueless comment. Bernstein was music incarnate, and totally inhabits the spirit of Mozart's music. Keep your prejudiced, dessicated comments to yourself.

What is the point of being the soloist and every time you have half a measure free you wiggle your hands at the orchestra? does that actually DO anything? Aren't these musicians capable of keeping time with one another without Lenny waving his mitts about?

@@spt2648 Yeah, I know. My son points out that I get FREE access to terrific concerts, so perhaps I shouldn't complain. It's just all the worse in the context of the music of genius.
And perhaps my dog increases his appreciation of Mozart thru such commercials.
