Good job! Thank you.
The most incredible fact about this performance is that Lenny survived 35 minutes without a cigarette! Bravo!
@zauber620 !!!! Yes indeed!
Absolutely fantastic comment!!
Yeah well we all know that Wolfgang was a chain smoker...

@@lawrencetaylor4101 LMAO
Leonard Bernsteins tragedy was, that he was genious pianist, conductor and composer and lot of people did only pick out one aspect "he can play piano, but there are others plying better" same as conductor and composer and nobody did see that he was genious in summary. He is unique. This vid shows him being soloist and conductor in one person. And Mozart is hard to play and more hard to conduct. But he runs it. For me he is one of the best ever.
Don’t forget that he was also a Beethoven-basher on a bad hair day.
Whenever he performed as pianist/conductor it always seemed to me that he put the composer and the music above himself. There was only one Lenny, alas!, and just the fact of millions of us who never knew him or would have known him while alive still think of him as “ Lenny” expresses the love and gratitude we feel.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 Beethoven always had bad hair.
The only Tragedy of Leonard Bernstein was he died so early… he got cancer from expisure to Asbestos .. what was widely used in cobstraction at that time:( Of course, smoking Did Not Help be strong and healthy…
Rather than that - Leonard was very Successful in his Unique Musical Career!
He was bringing Highest Culture to the mass!
His Music Appreciation Presentations along with live perfirmances of his and other great musicioms - were Phenomenal!!!
Unforgettable! Whole life events!!!
Huge Audiences, Concert Halls, were Packed!
He made History!!!
Became Famous by doing this in the while world!
And He definitely was a great pianist, marvelous Conductor as well!!!
And the Talented Composer too!!! His music for Westside Story play , for instance, is so great - not going off stages at Broadway till now!
Bravissimo, Maestro!!!
I can't believe Leonard Bernstein conducted the whole orchestra and performed this piece all in one by memory. That was a genius!
Many could do the same; this is not to detract from this ex excellent performance.
not really, that's why most conductors are originally pianists and some are actually better composers than Bernstein.
it's Andante is his favourite piece of music
Leonard was simply BRILLIANT all around!
I really like this performance. I studied this at university and performed it with the orchestra in my fourth year. What I love about this performance is that it is almost orchestra first - the conductor in Bernstein really restrains him as a soloist from doing too much, which in my view would be out of character for a Mozart concerto. Conducting from the piano as was the norm in Mozart’s day, and helps settle the piano part as in concert with the orchestra, not its master. The rise of the soloist vs the orchestra dynamic was very much a later Romantic era development for the concerto. There have certainly been greater pianists than Bernstein who have played this work, but I really like this rendition. Thanks for posting!
Because he was so good with Romantic and modern music it’s easy to forget how great Lenny was as a Classical musician.
At around 7 years old, I learned to play the piano because my mom played it. She played many classics, but Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts taught me to understand and enjoy them.
Lenny, Wolfie, and the Vienna Phil - an enchanting collaboration ! I loved the Andante.
It's something unbelievable.
As it’s a duet - Vienna philharmonic so literally attuned and so familiar with this composition and so we’ll-rehearsed that orchestra is transformed with Bernstein into one instrument Bernstein is playing with. Amazing! orchestra in super synched with Bernstein’s phrasing and joy of chord progressions, counterpoint, and melodic imagination of Mozart. I could listen and especially watch the great and intimate filming all day.
Thank you!
An excellent performance. I especially like the distinctive sound of that wonderful Bösendorfer piano.
The music of Mozart came from the heavens. Gosh, what a performance to prove us that.

It may sound crazy, but Bernstein is underrated. Not being a conductor by nature, he leads the orchestra much more easily through his direct leadership at piano than when he stands at the podium. Then he does not interfere with the orchestra with his not always clear enough gesture. - Of course, active concert work has somewhat bled dry his creativity, despite his unconditional fame and his obvious achievements in composition.
Wonderful performance by Lennie. Mozart orchestration and flow is sublime. People are talking about the "Black Mozart" from the movie Chevalier. I listened to his violin Concerto which was spirited. But then I listen to this. The orchestration ,the virtuosity, the flow the variety of Mozart beats it by a mile.
I also think he was a genius!! I was lucky to listen to him in Paris conducting in 1970 to me the other greats. Mozart interpreter
is Friedrich Gulda and Murray Perrahia

Lenny for ever. Unique.
What an interesting idea, to place the wind over to the right, that being in front of him. The wind in Mozart is so important, brilliant and beautiful. It really works!
I own a recording of Leonard Bernstein playing this. What wonder phrasing. Also it is a joy to see him conducting from the keyboard because that how Mozart did it. It is so good to see him actually in action. Bernstein playing the 15th Concerto is even better; it is just about perfect. I like it even better then any other interpretation.
Because he was so good with Romantic and modern music it’s easy to forget how great Lenny was as a Classical musician.
Very impressive. Almost as if I had never heard it before
Como não amar Bernstein? Simplesmente maravilhoso! Lindo! ❤

Beautiful super sensitive playing of Mr. Bernstein for this pearl of a concerto by mozart
Performances like this are why God still has patience with us and doesn't just destroy it all with fire and brimstone

Wonderful music, great performance. Bravo, maestro!
What a Wonderful Orchestra.
Great quality in the video. I'm surprised its so clear since it's so old.
Bern was the wonderful pianist, Thank you for share it
Awesome!!! It is a discovery for me! I knew about him as Great Classical Music Promoter, lecturer, Conductor, but never seen him live performance as a pianist! He is stunning pianist! Feels Mozart’s music so well, so sophisticated! That is a gift from God, very few can perform Mozart in Style, feeling for his Sunny Nature, Happy, but innocent Character!
Bravo, Maestro!!!
The Conducting along with being a Soloist - Very difficult task! Leonid Bernstein did it Amazingly!!!
So genius ! Bravo!!!
And the orchestra did great job too! Soloist/ conductor and orchestra made perfect ensemble! They feel each other, themselves, soloist - as One whole body of Unprecedented, Great Mozart’s music!
Bravo to all!
more superlatives than even Beethoven could muster. Yes, Bernstein was a pianist and well established and known for being an accompanist because that's what pianists do. A great majority of pianists grow up to be conductors--is that such a surprise? After all, there is Previn, Tilson-Thomas and many many others. And no, conducting while being the pianist was probably not very difficult because first of all, the Vienna Philharmonic can probably get through the music in its sleep and secondly, Bernstein has probably conducted or played the piece many dozens of time in his life. He just chose a good show piece to dazzle impressionable audiences. Probably Liberace could do it just as well if were had wanted to.

A good pianist for sure -but😊😊 if you meant a better conductor than Bernstein I can only say-if only!

First thing that struck me about Bernstein here was his “affected” conducting; pretending to himself that he was Viennese or a contemporary of Mozart. The orchestra is not influenced by his gesturing so he was probably trying to influence his own playing.

mucha propaganda, mucha pero mucha, gracias
He is good but I have rarely seen somebody so full of himself as he is. Half the orchestra cannot see him. He is like Lang Lang playing with his body. For Lisitsa or Yuja Wang this is dead easy. He must get the money for both; for playing AND conducting.
Heavenly --- until it was interrupted by the fuggin adverts. 🤬
There's Alma Deutscher, to answer the following question!
Look at the old fraud and his antics before the piano. What a slushy Romantic style he brings to the piano concerti of an unsurpassed Classical master. Poor Wolfgang! Bernstein should have stuck to Broadway musicals, where he is an undoubted master. As a classical musician he tried to imitate von Karajan, but was only a poor man's ripoff.
actually you haven't a clue what you're blabbing about. I might not like Bernstein, but he was an outstanding pianist and this is done in Mozart style and not "Romantic". You're not exactly bright regarding music in making that comment.
Clueless comment. Bernstein was music incarnate, and totally inhabits the spirit of Mozart's music. Keep your prejudiced, dessicated comments to yourself.
👏👏👏♥️💐
Unschlagbar.
Hay pub
What is the point of being the soloist and every time you have half a measure free you wiggle your hands at the orchestra? does that actually DO anything? Aren't these musicians capable of keeping time with one another without Lenny waving his mitts about?
Mozart typically conducted from the keyboard in this manner, as was common practice in his time.
